Thunes is a global fintech platform providing real-time cross-border payments infrastructure, connecting over 12 billion mobile wallets, stablecoin wallets, and bank accounts across 140+ countries and 90+ currencies. The company operates a proprietary Direct Global Network serving gig economy platforms (Uber, Deliveroo), super-apps (Grab, WeChat), and financial institutions.
As Legal Counsel for Africa, you will support the Legal & Compliance function in building robust legal and regulatory infrastructure for Thunes' African operations. Reporting to the Vice Presidents Legal and General Counsel, you will provide bilingual legal advice (English and French) on regulatory compliance, contracting, and risk management across the region. Your focus will be on advising the business on legal matters related to payment services, network partner and customer contracts, and ensuring full compliance with payment regulations, data protection requirements, and licensing obligations (payment institution licenses, money remittance licenses, etc.).
Key responsibilities include: serving as an integral member of the legal team and liaison across departments; providing pragmatic, legally sound guidance to cross-functional stakeholders; delivering legal and contractual support for commercial, product, payments, sales, and marketing activities; managing substantive legal issues spanning commercial, payments, privacy, IP, regulatory, and corporate matters; monitoring statutory and regulatory changes; reinforcing compliance culture; and optimizing allocation of internal and external legal resources.
You will work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, balancing independent work with collaborative teamwork. The role requires willingness to travel occasionally and work across multiple time zones.
