Beacon AI is building an AI platform to enhance aviation safety, efficiency, and capability. The company is backed by top investors, holds a dozen Department of Defense contracts, and partners with major airlines to deliver mission-critical systems. As Lead Frontend Engineer, you will drive technical leadership and strategic direction for the frontend team. You'll design and implement React-based features that integrate with the flight safety platform, enabling users to interact with complex aviation data and derive actionable insights. Key responsibilities include architecting frontend systems to handle large-scale real-time and historical aviation data, integrating and visualizing data from multiple sources including live streams and archived datasets, and mentoring engineers to drive best practices through code reviews and architectural discussions. You will partner closely with backend engineers, product managers, and UX/UI designers to make informed design and implementation decisions. You'll ensure reliable, maintainable frontend systems through automated testing, clear documentation, and strong engineering standards, while building reusable components and internal libraries to accelerate future development. Required qualifications include 5+ years building and shipping high-performance, user-facing web applications. You need deep expertise in React, TypeScript, JavaScript, state management, and modern web standards (HTML/CSS). Strong experience with asynchronous frontend patterns and efficient handling of live and historical data streams is essential. You should demonstrate proven ownership of complex features or product areas, driving work from concept through delivery with high autonomy. A proactive, resourceful mindset is critical for operating effectively in fast-moving, ambiguous environments. You must consistently set and uphold a high technical bar through design decisions, code quality, mentorship, and hiring input, with the ability to analyze and optimize frontend performance for scalability, responsiveness, and reliability. Bonus qualifications include passion for aviation and air travel safety, experience with geospatial or mapping tools (Mapbox, Cesium), deep experience with live data streaming and playback systems, and experience with video streaming technologies and real-time media delivery. This is a hybrid role based in San Carlos, CA, requiring 3+ days per week onsite. The company offers comprehensive healthcare (100% employee premiums covered, 25% for dependents), 3 weeks PTO plus 13+ paid company holidays, and a 401(k) plan.
