Monzo is seeking a Lead Machine Learning Scientist to join the Business Banking team, which serves over 1 million UK SME customers. The role combines technical leadership with hands-on individual contribution, focusing on developing and deploying advanced ML models that power next-generation business banking experiences. You will be one of the first ML Scientists in Business Banking, responsible for bringing structure and direction to ML capabilities while maintaining agility. Key responsibilities include developing and deploying advanced ML models on a cloud-native data platform serving hundreds of thousands of business customers, partnering with Product, Data Science, and other stakeholders to identify high-impact opportunities, and deciding when to use ML, GenAI, or simpler approaches based on trade-offs. You'll design robust evaluation and monitoring frameworks to ship responsibly and measure production impact. The role involves leading the design and implementation of batch and near-real-time models, including LLM-powered experiences, predictive models, and time-series forecasting. You'll collaborate closely with MLOps and Backend Engineering to operationalize models end-to-end, set technical standards, mentor others, and support experimentation and iteration. The ideal candidate has multiple years of track record developing and deploying advanced ML models in fast-moving tech companies, with proven ability to deliver business impact. You should be impact-driven, own the end-to-end journey from business problem to production solution, have a self-starter mindset, and be fluent in Python with extensive hands-on experience with scikit-learn and modern ML frameworks. Experience with LLMs, time-series forecasting, and responsible AI practices is valued.
