Xero is seeking a Lead Engineer to shape the architecture and implementation of distributed systems for their agentic workflow platform. This foundational engineering role focuses on building resilient infrastructure for accounting workflows, with an emphasis on durability and intelligent automation across their global software network.
You will establish code designs and engineering standards that ensure complex financial workflows run reliably at scale. The role combines technical delivery with mentorship—you'll guide engineers through highly ambiguous challenges while championing an AI-forward approach to software development. Your leadership will influence how global platforms evolve and set technical benchmarks across engineering teams.
The team operates in small, collaborative pods solving complex architectural challenges. You'll work with a modern stack including .NET, C#, AWS, Kubernetes, and Temporal for workflow durability. The team is actively integrating advanced AI tools and large language models to accelerate engineering delivery and design patterns.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and implementing distributed systems architecture
- Building and scaling the agentic workflow platform for accounting workflows
- Mentoring engineers and fostering technical confidence
- Collaborating across functions in ambiguous environments
- Evaluating and selecting optimal databases and technologies for complex backend systems
- Participating in cross-region coordination with teams in Australia and New Zealand
You bring deep product engineering capabilities, thorough understanding of distributed systems and cloud architecture, and strong familiarity with AWS or Kubernetes. Natural mentoring qualities, collaborative mindset, and enthusiasm for AI literacy are essential. The role requires flexibility for occasional cross-timezone collaboration, with preference for Pacific time zone alignment.
