With over 200 million athletes globally, Strava is building the world's largest community of active people. The Data Products team is responsible for transforming Strava's unique community and activity data into reliable, reusable, enriched datasets that power user experiences at scale. In this role, you will serve as a strategic individual contributor partnering closely with a growing team of Machine Learning Engineers. You'll drive the team's measurement strategy and define the development feedback loop, establishing evaluation standards, identifying performance breakdowns, and steering the team toward high-impact opportunities. Key responsibilities include: - Defining evaluation frameworks, offline and online metrics, and quality bars for Strava's internal models and ML products - Building the measurement layer for cross-domain ML products to scale organizational visibility into performance - Owning experimentation and monitoring for production models, including drift detection for enriched datasets - Identifying and sizing AI/ML product opportunities, translating ambiguous problems into scoped initiatives with clear success criteria - Serving as the data science domain expert, raising standards for baselines, validation, and evidence quality across ML engineers and cross-functional partners You'll bring 5+ years of experience in data science or related quantitative domains, with hands-on ownership of model evaluation and measurement for production systems. You should have strong experience defining evaluation frameworks for ambiguous ML problems, including baseline selection, offline/online metric design, and validation strategies with imperfect ground truth. Strong SQL proficiency and production-quality Python for statistical data processing are essential. You'll be fluent in metrics and measurement for consumer software products and comfortable translating business needs into technical plans. Strava operates on a flexible hybrid model requiring more than half your time on-site in the San Francisco office—three days per week.
