Salary: USD 335,000 - 385,000 / annual
Anthropic is seeking an experienced IP Counsel with deep patent expertise to join its growing legal team. The role focuses on building and protecting Anthropic's intellectual property portfolio while supporting the organization's mission to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems.
Key responsibilities include supporting organic patent development through invention harvesting, drafting oversight, and prosecution management in coordination with outside counsel. You will develop and implement comprehensive patent strategies in the U.S. and internationally, aligned with Anthropic's business objectives and technology roadmap. The role requires providing broad IP guidance across the organization, identifying and addressing potential issues spanning patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and open source matters.
Additional responsibilities include analyzing and responding to third-party patent demands, evaluating strategic patent acquisition and licensing opportunities, conducting IP due diligence for M&A transactions and partnerships, and advising on IP aspects of commercial agreements including licenses, joint development agreements, and technology transfers. You will educate technical teams on best practices to protect Anthropic's innovations.
Minimum qualifications include a JD and active bar membership in at least one U.S. state, registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and substantial patent experience including invention harvesting, prosecution, and portfolio development. You must have worked directly with engineers, researchers, or product teams to identify and protect inventions, with the ability to explain IP concepts clearly to non-lawyers. Experience balancing legal protection with business practicality in collaborative settings is essential.
Preferred qualifications include 10+ years of legal experience with demonstrated expertise across the IP spectrum, particularly patents; California bar membership; an advanced degree in computer science, engineering, or related technical field; deep expertise in IP areas beyond patents; experience with AI, machine learning, or cutting-edge technologies; experience analyzing third-party patent assertions or evaluating patent acquisitions; and in-house experience at a technology company or supporting technology clients through rapid growth.
