xAI is seeking a Human Data Engineer to join their team in Palo Alto. You will serve as a bridge between engineering and data operations, partnering with model teams to design and execute high-value human data projects that drive AI model training and evaluation. In this hands-on technical role, you will own end-to-end delivery of critical data and evaluation projects, translating engineering needs into meaningful training signals. Key responsibilities include partnering with model and engineering teams to understand requirements, building tools and systems to measure data effectiveness (yield, eval lift, usage), and maintaining rigorous data integrity with a focus on factual accuracy and quality over quantity. You will research and implement techniques for data collection, annotation, generation, and multi-modal integration. You'll design and improve annotation workflows and labeling interfaces, act as a liaison between engineering and human data teams, and collaborate with operations to scale projects and share learnings. The role requires running evaluations yourself, identifying quality issues and anomalies in datasets, and contributing to demand forecasting. The ideal candidate has a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related STEM field (or 4+ years equivalent experience), with demonstrated experience collaborating across functional teams and analyzing datasets. Preferred qualifications include a master's degree, direct experience curating datasets for large language models, familiarity with annotation tools and workflows, experience with multimodal or domain-specific data, and proficiency in Python, SQL, or similar tools. The company operates with a flat organizational structure emphasizing hands-on contribution, engineering excellence, and strong communication. Weekend work and travel to other xAI sites may be required.
