January is a fintech company transforming consumer credit collections and recovery. The company has serviced over $20 billion in debt across 20+ million consumers, using AI to make financial hardship more human and recoverable. January is expanding rapidly and seeking an HR Generalist to build and scale the people operations function.
In this role, you will own the complete employee lifecycle at January, from offer acceptance through exit. You'll manage onboarding, performance cycles, compensation planning, leave and accommodations, visa sponsorship and immigration casework, and offboarding. You'll be the primary point of contact for employees on pay, benefits, and policy questions, and will work closely with hiring managers and recruiting throughout the hiring and onboarding process.
You'll also own HR's operational infrastructure: the compliance calendar, benefits administration and Open Enrollment, visa casework management, leave administration, and the HR tech stack. You'll run payroll every two weeks, manage vendor relationships, build automation and self-serve systems to reduce manual work, and develop people analytics from HRIS and payroll data.
This role requires someone who treats process as product—building documentation and systems that allow HR to scale with headcount rather than strain under it. You'll need to make sound judgment calls in ambiguous, high-stakes situations (visa classifications, leave calculations, terminations) where small errors have legal consequences. You'll shift fluidly between warm first-day welcomes, difficult conversations, and translating legal language into plain English. You know when to escalate versus decide, surface gaps proactively, and fix systemic issues rather than one-off problems. You'll build strong cross-functional relationships with Legal, IT, Finance, and outside counsel, understanding exactly where HR's authority ends.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of experience in HR/People Operations
- Nice-to-have: experience with Rippling or Sequoia HRIS platforms
