Gusto is seeking an experienced Senior Data Science Leader to lead the Sales Data team, which powers insights, forecasting, and measurement infrastructure for customer acquisition, expansion, and retention. This is a dual-mandate role combining operational and transformational responsibilities.
Operational mandate: Gusto's sales data foundation has significant technical debt. You'll partner closely with Data Engineering to assess the current state, architect a modern and scalable data layer, and execute a phased remediation plan.
Transformational mandate: As the foundation is rebuilt, evolve the team's capabilities from reactive query fulfillment and reporting toward advanced forecasting, causal inference, and analytical rigor. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in sales data, commitment to building scalable foundations, and genuine command of experimentation and quasi-experimental methods.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Lead the Sales Analytics team, driving vision and championing data scientists and analysts to deliver impact across customer acquisition and product expansion sales teams
- Conduct deep-dive analyses to identify revenue drivers and anomalies; translate complex data into actionable insights for senior leadership and cross-functional partners
- Rebuild foundational data systems alongside Data Engineering and Service Platform partners to create a world-class sales analytics ecosystem
- Partner with the Chief Revenue Officer, Sales Operations, Data Engineering, and Service Platform teams to align on shared data and infrastructure roadmaps
- Evolve sales forecasting methodology to incorporate rigorous analytics methods (propensity scoring, seasonality controls, etc.)
- Leverage AI-first development to create self-serve analytics capabilities for operations partners; stay ahead of emerging AI tools
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing analytics team, shifting culture from reactive query fulfillment toward strategic analysis and statistical fluency
- Identify opportunities where deeper technical solutions from Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering, Data Science, or AI/ML Engineering could accelerate revenue-driving analytics
