Backcountry is seeking a Head of Retail Stores & Operations to lead and grow a high-performing retail organization across Backcountry and Backcountry Outlet locations. This executive role reports to the Senior Vice President of Retail and Culinary and is based in Salt Lake City with a hybrid schedule (3 days/week in-office).
You will own end-to-end responsibility for the retail business, including strategy, P&L management, and operational execution across a growing store portfolio. Key responsibilities include:
• Leading and developing a high-performing field organization through coaching, succession planning, and organizational design to support retail expansion.
• Driving sales, profitability, and sustainable growth through disciplined execution, financial stewardship, and operational excellence.
• Expanding revenue streams including equipment rentals, services, memberships, and other opportunities while maximizing operational efficiency.
• Fostering a customer-obsessed culture that delivers exceptional service, builds loyalty, and strengthens brand positioning.
• Overseeing equipment rental operations, including fleet management, seasonal staffing, safety, compliance, and performance across all locations.
• Recruiting, developing, and retaining top talent while building a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Establishing clear performance expectations through KPIs, reporting, and accountability mechanisms.
• Partnering cross-functionally with Merchandising, Marketing, Finance, HR, Real Estate, and Operations on strategic initiatives.
• Championing the use of AI, analytics, and emerging technologies to simplify operations, improve productivity, and enhance customer and employee experience.
• Developing and improving operating procedures, training programs, and best practices to create a scalable, efficient retail organization.
This is a lean team environment where you will move fast, own significant scope, and see direct impact from your decisions. You will work directly with the SVP and C-suite to shape the future of Backcountry's retail footprint.
Requirements:
• 10+ years of progressive multi-unit retail leadership experience.
• Proven success driving sales, profitability, operational excellence, and customer-obsessed culture.
• Demonstrated ability to develop high-performing leaders and scale a growing retail organization.
• Strong financial acumen with experience managing P&L, budgeting, forecasting, and labor.
• Experience leading equipment rental or service-based retail operations, including fleet management and operational execution.
• Experience leading organizational change and implementing scalable operating practices.
• Proven ability to leverage AI, technology, and analytics to improve business performance and decision-making.
• Exceptional communication, collaboration, and cross-functional leadership skills.
• Based in or willing to relocate to Salt Lake City area with ability to travel frequently.
