Anthropic is seeking a Head of Policy Design for Societal Harms to lead the policy design team within the Safeguards organization. This role manages teams responsible for defining and enforcing policies across critical harm areas including child safety, user well-being, harmful manipulation, radicalization, and election integrity.
You will lead the strategy for how mitigations—policies, detection and enforcement systems, and product interventions—complement Claude's trained values and character. The role involves understanding how risks materialize in the real world and designing appropriate preventative measures across the full stack: model training, policy enforcement, and product design.
Key responsibilities include leading and developing managers and teams across the consumer harms portfolio; coordinating policy decisions to ensure they are tracked, consistent, and legible across stakeholders; setting mitigation strategy in partnership with the alignment training team; prioritizing across competing harm areas; serving as escalation point for high-severity and ambiguous decisions; partnering with engineering, data science, product, legal, and research throughout the model development cycle; and engaging external experts, civil society organizations, and regulators.
You will work closely with product to develop and iterate on safety layer strategy and vision, and spend significant time developing the leads who own each harm area. This is a cross-functional leadership role requiring expertise in specific harm domains combined with fluency in how frontier models are developed and deployed.
