Tide is a fintech platform serving over 2 million SMEs globally with business banking, invoicing, accounting, and commerce solutions. The Commercial Services unit is a high-growth department structured around Buy and Sell pillars, building tools for product launches, sales expansion, and customer loyalty.
As Head of Engineering for Commercial Services, you will lead the technical strategy and execution for Tide's commercial platform. This is a senior technical leadership role with significant organizational scope—you will lead and mentor Engineering Managers and senior engineers while maintaining hands-on involvement in architecture and design decisions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Defining and driving architectural direction for Commercial Services, ensuring scalability, resilience, and compliance
- Leading design and development of high-quality credit products
- Collaborating with Product, Compliance, and Business teams to enhance offerings
- Overseeing third-party integrations and technical delivery
- Providing hands-on technical guidance on architecture, design, and engineering decisions
- Championing engineering best practices including system design, security, and software development standards
- Mentoring engineers and Engineering Managers to foster learning, ownership, and technical excellence
- Influencing Tide's overall technical strategy as the company scales globally
You will work with a modern tech stack: Java 17, Spring Boot, JOOQ for microservices; event-driven architecture with SNS/SQS and Kafka; MySQL and PostgreSQL on AWS; Docker, Terraform, EKS/Kubernetes; DataDog, ELK stack, and Rollbar for observability; GitHub with GitHub Actions for CI/CD.
Required qualifications: 10+ years backend engineering experience with at least 3 years in senior engineering leadership roles. Strong expertise in microservices, event-driven architectures, and distributed systems. Demonstrated ability to leverage AI tools and LLMs to improve engineering productivity. Proven track record building scalable, resilient, fault-tolerant systems and delivering complex third-party integrations. Strong mentoring skills and ability to translate business goals into technical roadmaps.
