Beacon Software is a holding company that acquires and operates 25+ vertical market SaaS businesses across North America, spanning campground management, election platforms, field safety tools, proptech, workforce scheduling, and more. Data is central to their operating model—used to run portfolio companies better, underwrite acquisitions, and embed AI capabilities into products. You will be Beacon's first dedicated data infrastructure leader at the holding-company level. This is a hands-on director role that combines strategic architecture with significant hands-on coding. You will design and build the central data platform from scratch, including the lakehouse, warehouse, and pipeline architecture that unifies data across 25+ portfolio companies with vastly different maturity levels, source systems, and compliance requirements. Key responsibilities include: architecting multi-tenant data isolation across portfolio companies; designing ingestion strategies for diverse sources (SaaS apps, transactional databases, Stripe, Salesforce, custom APIs); establishing data modeling and transformation standards (dbt, Spark) that scale across the portfolio; building real-time and batch processing frameworks for operational analytics and AI feature engineering; implementing security, compliance, and cross-cloud (AWS/Azure) connectivity; owning infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/Pulumi) for the data stack; partnering with AI and product teams on feature stores and vector infrastructure; evaluating and owning the vendor stack (active Snowflake vs. Databricks evaluation); and serving as the senior technical voice in acquisition diligence. You should have deep hands-on experience with distributed systems, query engines, or cloud data platforms. Required technical skills include production Python, SQL, and infrastructure-as-code; deep familiarity with modern lakehouse and warehouse internals (Iceberg, Delta, Parquet, Snowflake, Databricks); strong grasp of streaming architectures (Kafka, Kinesis, Flink) and CDC patterns; and experience building for both analytical and operational workloads at scale. Ideal background includes time at companies like Snowflake, Databricks, or Confluent building the platforms others run on. Operating style matters: you should still get excited to write code and review PRs, operate well in small-team high-autonomy environments, make architectural decisions fast and iterate, translate infrastructure complexity into plain language for non-technical stakeholders, and scope work across many different business contexts. This is not a purely strategic role—you will be in the systems day-to-day and set the bar for any team built around you. This is also not a maintenance role; the platform is net-new and you will design it from scratch. Based in San Francisco with hybrid expected; remote considered for the right candidate with travel expectations.
