Salary: USD 250,000 - 350,000 / annual

You will be Atticus's first Head of Communications, reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer and partnering closely with the Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Chief Legal Officer, and Founder & CEO. This is a builder role where you'll establish the company's media presence and shape how stakeholders—clients, law firms, the SSA, policymakers, and thought leaders—understand Atticus and its impact.
You'll own corporate communications and public relations, building a program anchored in two engines: data journalism and policy-driven storytelling, particularly around the Social Security Administration. Your responsibilities include:
- Setting communications strategy, core messages, and a 12-month editorial calendar to grow media coverage and build operational infrastructure
- Building an earned media program that lands Atticus in tier-1 outlets (New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg) by turning proprietary data into reporter-ready insights
- Developing rapid-response capability to move quickly when SSA or adjacent policy news breaks, positioning Atticus as the first call for benefits system perspective
- Partnering with the Public Affairs team to design and execute DC fly-ins, Congressional briefings, roundtables, and hill events that put client stories in front of members and staff
- Owning CEO and leadership positioning, thought leadership platforms, and crisis preparedness
- Managing PR and public affairs agencies and coordinating across Policy, Legal, Product, and Growth teams
- Building and developing the communications team as the function grows
Success in year one means Atticus becomes a regular, credible voice in tier-1 coverage of Social Security and disability benefits; establishes a rapid-response operation that shows up within 24 hours of major SSA policy moments; executes well-staged Congressional events and fly-ins; establishes the CEO's executive platform; and integrates earned media and public affairs under one unified plan.
The company is remote-first with headquarters in LA and team distributed across the US. You'll travel to LA quarterly for in-person work, offsites, and retreats, with travel covered by the company.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 10+ years in communications with meaningful time in a policy-adjacent environment (advocacy, government, regulated industry, mission-driven consumer brand, or firms serving those clients)
- Track record of earned media wins delivered through data and original insight, not just relationships; ability to turn datasets into reporter-ready stories
- Public affairs experience: organized fly-ins, staged Congressional events, worked with hill staff, moved policy narratives through Washington
- Strong writing and editing skills across reporter pitches, CEO op-eds, internal memos, and talking points; high editorial standards
- Cross-functional quarterback skills; comfort holding the middle across agencies, Legal, Policy, executives, and Growth to reach clarity
- Government affairs fluency; understanding of how Congress and federal agencies work; existing or ability to quickly build DC relationships
- Genuine compassion for the people served; understanding that clients are often at the hardest moments of their lives
- Comfort in a performance-driven, data-first culture; ability to bring comms thinking into that environment and hold the function to similar measurement standards
