Scopely is seeking an experienced Game Design Director to lead the design vision and strategy for Star Trek Fleet Command, a top-grossing 4X MMO launched in 2018. This is a hybrid role based in Barcelona with visa sponsorship and relocation support available.
In this director-level position, you will own the design standards, direction, and player experiences across monthly content releases and the game's evolving systems. You'll lead a team of designers and live ops specialists, directing them through the creative process to deliver compelling experiences that meet both player expectations and product objectives. Your responsibilities include managing and mentoring designers in systems and economy design, fostering a high-performance culture within your department, and shaping the design process to ensure player satisfaction.
You'll collaborate cross-functionally with Product Managers, Analysts, and Engineers to implement features that advance the genre. A key part of your role is translating KPI targets and data into actionable design direction for your teams, while maintaining deep expertise in complex game economies, progression modeling, and F2P monetization mechanics. You'll evaluate performance using data, player feedback, and hands-on playtesting, and design for long-term content extensibility and system health.
Required qualifications include 5+ years of game design leadership experience and 8+ years designing systems or economies for live, free-to-play games, preferably in MMO, 4X, or strategy genres. You need proven expertise in F2P systems design, progression modeling, and complex game economies. Strong leadership and team management skills are essential, along with the ability to provide clear creative direction and managerial feedback that elevates others' work. You should be proficient with spreadsheets and confident in balancing power curves, pacing, and resource flow. Experience working cross-functionally in live production environments and a collaborative approach to game development are required.
Bonus qualifications include deep understanding of the 4X genre with F2P experience, familiarity with SQL or scripting tools, passion for Star Trek or sci-fi, and previous work on alliance or co-op systems in large-scale games.
