Anthropic's Education Labs is building a new paradigm for how AI transforms human capability. This role is part researcher, part product builder, part interaction designer—a unique opportunity to define what "good" looks like in AI-powered skill development.
You'll be the second technical builder on a small team, operating as a one-person technical shop while collaborating closely with researchers, product, and design. Your mission: ship features that help users develop genuine skill with AI, measured by capability growth rather than engagement metrics.
Key responsibilities include architecting end-to-end prototypes (front-end and back-end) that test new interaction paradigms, with particular attention to motion, polish, and interaction feel. You'll define technical direction for the team, establish patterns others can follow, and translate research insights about skill development into shipped product. You'll also shape team strategy and roadmap, identifying high-leverage opportunities and building conviction across stakeholders.
You'll build relationships across Product, Design, and Research to influence how skill development principles shape Anthropic's broader product strategy. This means documenting and sharing your work through clear writing, prototypes, and presentations that influence thinking across the organization.
Ideal candidates have 6+ years building and shipping web products with deep full-stack expertise. You need strong front-end craft (TypeScript/JavaScript, React, CSS) with an eye for interaction design, motion, and visual detail. Back-end and data pipeline experience (Python, API design, analytics infrastructure) is essential. You should have a portfolio showcasing innovative interaction designs and a track record of independently driving features from prototype to production.
Beyond technical skills, you need deep conviction about human capability and skepticism of purely engagement-driven metrics. Experience or genuine passion for skill development, HCI, developer tools, or products that help people become more capable is important. You should be comfortable with ambiguity, able to rapidly prototype and iterate, and have strong product design instincts. Finally, you need strategic leadership skills: experience setting vision, shaping team strategy, building conviction across cross-functional stakeholders, and influencing roadmaps beyond your immediate team.
