Salary: USD 250,000 - 275,000 / annual
Synthetic is rebuilding the financial operations software stack for software companies. The platform handles contracts, billing, invoicing, payments, and accounting—replacing fragmented QuickBooks, Stripe, and spreadsheet workflows with an integrated, AI-assisted solution. The company recently raised $10M from Khosla Ventures and others.
As Founding Controller, you are the first dedicated accounting hire and report directly to the founder. This is a high-impact, multi-faceted role that spans customer success, AI quality control, process automation, and product research. Your core responsibilities include:
- Ensuring customer financial data integrity as the product evolves rapidly; nothing breaks or falls through the cracks.
- Bridging gaps between system functionality and customer understanding; sometimes explaining working systems better, sometimes identifying gaps that need engineering fixes.
- Handling manual processes (e.g., customer onboarding) until they are ready for automation.
- Building and refining customer support and business processes on the fly.
- Serving as a trusted advisor to customers who rely on Synthetic with their money.
- Collaborating with product and engineering to prioritize fixes and improvements based on real customer pain.
The role will evolve significantly each quarter as the company scales. A major perk: bank reconciliation is already fully autonomous, so you won't spend time on that.
The company operates in-person in San Francisco 6 days a week, with flexibility on hours. They prioritize winning over optics.
REQUIREMENTS:
- CPA certification required.
- Proven controller experience at a software company; you have run real SaaS books.
- Deep fluency in ASC 606 revenue recognition, billing, invoicing, and accrual bookkeeping for software businesses.
- Strong customer relationships and communication skills (clients love you).
- Demonstrated ability to code or script solutions; you have examples you're happy to show off.
