RecallAI is seeking a Founding Controller to build and lead the accounting function for a venture-backed, high-growth software company with a usage-based (consumption) revenue model. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll own the complete accounting close, financial reporting, and revenue recognition infrastructure from the ground up.
You will be responsible for the end-to-end monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, delivering accurate financials on tight timelines. A core focus is leading revenue recognition for usage-based and hybrid subscription-plus-consumption contracts under ASC 606, including complex variable consideration, minimum commitments, overages, and true-ups. You'll partner closely with Engineering, Data, Revenue Operations, Sales, and Product teams to ensure metered usage data flows cleanly from product telemetry through billing systems into revenue recognition and financial statements.
Key responsibilities include managing integrations with billing/metering platforms (Stripe Billing, Metronome) and ERP/GL systems; maintaining deferred revenue, unbilled receivables, and contract asset/liability schedules; overseeing accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger operations; designing and implementing internal controls and accounting policies; managing the annual Big 4 audit as primary auditor contact; performing FP&A work on revenue forecasting and usage trend analysis; ensuring multi-state and multi-country sales tax/VAT compliance; preparing board and investor financial packages; and managing the accounting team as the organization scales.
You'll need 8+ years of progressive accounting experience with at least 3 years in a Controller or accounting leadership role. Direct experience with usage-based, consumption, or hybrid revenue models is essential—you must understand ASC 606 variable consideration nuances beyond flat-fee SaaS. Hands-on experience with modern billing/metering platforms and ERP systems (NetSuite, QuickBooks Online) is required. You should have a track record of fast, accurate month-end closes in high-growth environments, experience building and documenting internal controls with SOX or audit-readiness exposure, and strong GAAP technical accounting skills. Comfort with ambiguity and a builder's mindset are critical. Prior Big 4 audit experience is expected. Nice-to-haves include early/growth-stage startup experience, CPA certification, multi-entity/international accounting expertise, and experience integrating product telemetry pipelines with billing systems.
