Chalk is a data platform for machine learning inference, combining high-performance infrastructure with developer-friendly tools. The platform powers fraud detection, identity verification, and optimization use cases at leading companies.
As a Forward Deployed Strategist, you will own the technical direction of Chalk's customer integrations, determining what gets built, in what order, and whether it meets requirements. You'll work alongside sales, delivery, account management, and support teams, serving as the technical authority across all customer-facing work.
You'll partner closely with Forward Deployed Engineers who build directly with customer engineering teams on model-driven problems (fraud, payments, underwriting, recommendations, pricing) and increasingly on agentic workflows (investigation agents, workflow automation, trust and safety). Most customer problems originate in their architecture rather than Chalk's, so you'll advise on systems beyond Chalk's scope.
Key responsibilities include: conducting technical discovery to understand customer systems and pain points; advising on architecture and migration paths, plainly communicating what will break and what to sequence; designing solutions on Chalk with clear bars for correctness, latency, and cost; designing agentic systems with appropriate guardrails and evaluation against production context; designing and executing tight POCs with clear success criteria; answering principal engineers' technical questions during evaluation phases; identifying high-impact work and assessing fit; breaking work into projects with clear owners and dates; maintaining technical coherence post-launch; and feeding learnings back to product and engineering teams.
You should have deep production infrastructure experience and understand how live systems fail. You've advised engineering teams on systems you didn't build and they've taken your advice. You have strong technical taste, can defend architectural opinions, and know how to scope POCs that prove exactly what matters. You're proficient in Python and SQL, can build prototypes and reference implementations, and can read customer codebases fluently. You're willing to deliver hard truths, including when customer plans are misguided. You work well cross-functionally and communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
Bonus experience includes deploying software into customer clouds, getting AI agents to run reliably against production systems and data, domain depth in fraud/payments/underwriting/identity/recommendations/pricing/logistics, and Rust or C++.
