Coinbase's Compliance organization manages regulatory obligations across 60+ global entities, including transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, regulatory change management, and exam readiness. This role is embedded within the Office of the CTO as a founding engineer in Compliance, bridging the gap between compliance stakeholders and engineering teams.
You will identify high-value workflow automation opportunities and rapidly prototype solutions using Coinbase's existing AI platform, driving measurable adoption of AI tooling across the Compliance organization. You'll serve as the connective tissue between Compliance leadership and engineering teams, acting as advocate, translator, and builder.
Key responsibilities include: embedding with Compliance leadership and frontline teams to surface automation opportunities in workflows like transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, regulatory change management, and exam preparation; prototyping quickly using existing AI platforms before recommending new builds; owning the Compliance automation roadmap in partnership with the Chief Compliance Officer; defining build-vs-buy strategy for Compliance tooling; ensuring all automated compliance outputs are traceable, reviewable, and defensible to regulators with auditability and human-in-the-loop controls; and driving adoption through brown-bags, prototype walkthroughs, and feedback loops.
Required experience includes 5+ years of software engineering shipping production systems in ambiguous, stakeholder-heavy environments; hands-on experience deploying LLM-based applications with prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, and hallucination guardrails; ability to embed with non-technical domain experts and translate complex workflows into engineering requirements; familiarity with compliance and regulatory systems (transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, regulatory filing, case management); knowledge of multi-agent orchestration concepts; and experience in Forward Deployed Engineering, Solutions Engineering, or embedded technical advisory roles, ideally in compliance-tech, RegTech, or financial services.
