Thought Machine is building modern cloud-native banking technology to replace legacy systems at financial institutions worldwide. As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will be the primary technical interface between Thought Machine and client banks, embedding directly with their engineering teams to design, build, and deliver production-ready implementations of Vault (the company's core banking platform) and associated products.
This is a hands-on, generalist engineering role spanning backend development, systems integration, infrastructure, and technical consulting. You will own the technical success of assigned client engagements across the full project lifecycle—from initial requirements and design through production deployment and optimization. You'll travel to client sites up to 25% of the time, work autonomously in complex environments, and serve as the connective tissue between Thought Machine's product teams and client delivery teams.
Key responsibilities include embedding with client engineering teams to deliver working implementations; writing production-quality code (primarily Python or Go) for integrations, tooling, and data pipelines; debugging and resolving complex issues across distributed systems (databases, messaging, container orchestration, cloud infrastructure); designing scalable solutions for high availability, disaster recovery, and security; supporting presales activities with technical demonstrations and proof-of-concept work; and channeling client feedback back to product and engineering teams to drive improvements.
You must have strong hands-on proficiency in Python or Go, working knowledge of Linux/Unix, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL-like databases, and Kafka-like messaging systems, and practical experience deploying and operating workloads on AWS, GCP, or Azure. Demonstrated experience delivering technical projects end-to-end with external clients or partners is essential—you understand the full journey from design to production, including edge cases and operability. Banking or financial services experience is desirable but not required. The role offers competitive salary, pension matching (5%), life insurance, and generous parental leave.
