Remote is a global HR platform enabling businesses to recruit, pay, and manage international teams compliantly. The SRE team owns Kubernetes, AWS, PostgreSQL, CI infrastructure, observability, and reliability practices across the engineering organization.
You will lead the SRE team as a 60% individual contributor, 40% people manager. This role balances hands-on technical work with team leadership. You will own career development for your reports, align team focus with company goals, and serve as the team's spokesperson across engineering. You'll stay technically credible enough to set direction and identify issues before escalation.
The reliability practice at Remote is maturing—SLO frameworks are live on early teams and need broader rollout. There is meaningful work to balance operational load against project delivery. The foundations are in place, but interesting problems remain open.
You bring proven SRE or infrastructure team leadership experience, with a track record of growing engineers' careers, handling underperformance directly, hiring effectively, and resolving team dynamics. Technical depth is essential: hands-on site reliability, DevOps, or cloud infrastructure background; production Kubernetes experience; AWS at scale; AI infrastructure building and scaling; observability practices; Terraform IaC; CI/CD systems (GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins); Docker and shell scripting; incident response, on-call, SLOs, and error budgets; regulated environment experience.
You excel at prioritizing when operational and project work compete, protect team focus without dropping reliability commitments, write clearly for async distributed work, and build cross-team relationships. Nice-to-haves include backend language knowledge (Elixir, Java, Clojure, Node.js, Python), modern observability (OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, Honeycomb), PostgreSQL/Aurora operations, Linux systems administration, security, FinOps, and experience growing teams from small bases.
