Supabase is a Postgres development platform providing a complete backend solution including Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime, and Vector Search. The company is ~400 people across 60+ countries and has raised over $1B.
You will lead an engineering team building Supabase Spark, an initiative to create the next generation of agentic databases supporting billions of databases with millions created daily. This is a people management role where you'll build and scale a high-trust, remote-first team while maintaining technical credibility.
Key responsibilities include:
**Team & People:** Build healthy team culture in a globally distributed environment. Conduct 1:1s, performance management, career development, and onboarding. Handle people administration (leave, time off, etc.).
**Hiring:** Own the hiring plan and act as Hiring Manager. Conduct first-round interviews for all team roles. Partner with Talent Acquisition on sourcing, interviewing, and closing candidates. Contribute to headcount planning and org design.
**Delivery & Roadmap:** Own the team's roadmap and project management using Linear. Manage workflow intake and Slack triage. Drive accountability with clear milestones. Own weekly updates and stakeholder alignment. Organize effort against support tickets and maintain SLOs. Surface risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs early to leadership.
**Incident Commander:** Train as an Incident Commander to drive coordination and resolution. Lead blameless post-incident reviews.
The role expects you to participate in design discussions and set the bar for engineering quality and best practices, though direct code contribution is not required.
**Requirements:**
- 5+ years of engineering background with depth in complex systems
- 3+ years managing remote engineering teams
- Experience managing engineering teams at a cloud, SaaS, or developer tools company
- Strong technical credibility in backend and database systems (APIs, auth, Postgres access control, roles, grants, RLS)
- Experience with developer tools or databases, ideally both SQLite and Postgres ecosystems
- Track record leading a team shipping a developer-facing API or platform product from early stage to production
- Experience managing remote, globally distributed teams working asynchronously across time zones
- Genuine passion for people management as primary work, not a secondary track
- Ability to build psychological safety and feedback culture; give feedback often and in the moment
- Operate as a multiplier focused on helping individuals achieve more, not being the strongest technical voice
- Coach rather than direct; remove blockers and trust engineers to own execution
- Demonstrated performance management track record with specific examples of difficult conversations
- Comfortable with ambiguity and building structure where there isn't much
- Clear communicator who writes well; default async and written communication; proactive context-setting
- Collaborative, low-ego, adaptable; thrive with high-autonomy senior ICs with strong technical opinions
- Comfortable with aggressive scoping and evaluation-driven development
