OpenAI is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the ChatGPT Search Infrastructure team, which builds foundational systems powering search experiences across ChatGPT. This team develops infrastructure connecting AI models with search systems and real-time information sources, enabling ChatGPT to deliver timely, relevant, and trustworthy answers globally.
You will set technical and organizational direction for systems bringing search capabilities into ChatGPT, guiding architectural decisions across search orchestration, model and prompt integration, serving infrastructure, experimentation, observability, evaluation, and product integrations. A core responsibility is creating leverage for Search product verticals by developing extensible platforms enabling independent feature development, testing, and launches without ongoing core infrastructure involvement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Define and drive technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for ChatGPT Search Infrastructure spanning search orchestration, APIs, model integration, serving, experimentation, evaluation, observability, and product integrations
- Lead and develop a team of experienced engineers, create meaningful ownership opportunities, and foster inclusive, high-trust culture with clear accountability
- Partner with Post-Training on model launches, A/B experiments, search-behavior evaluation, and prompt optimization
- Build reusable platforms enabling Search product teams to independently implement, test, and launch features with automated guardrails protecting reliability, scalability, quality, and latency
- Partner with Inference, Indexing, and Retrieval teams to evolve end-to-end Search architecture and improve product outcomes
- Define and uphold service objectives of 99.9%+ availability, sub-second latency, and scalability supporting ChatGPT's growth
- Establish strong engineering practices across system design, testability, observability, experimentation, capacity planning, rollout safety, and incident prevention
- Lead multiple complex workstreams, remove technical and organizational bottlenecks, and build alignment across product, research, and infrastructure teams
Ideal candidates have experience managing senior engineers on complex, high-scale infrastructure or distributed systems; significant technical depth in backend infrastructure, platform engineering, APIs, low-latency serving, or AI-powered product development; understanding of how models, prompts, inference, search orchestration, indexing, and retrieval work together; experience partnering with research teams on model launches and controlled experiments; track record building shared platforms enabling independent feature development; and ability to move between technical depth, product strategy, organizational leadership, and people management.
