PermitFlow is an applied AI company automating construction permitting workflows across the U.S. construction industry. The company has raised over $90M from top-tier investors (Accel, Kleiner Perkins, Y Combinator, Felicis) and is backed by leaders from OpenAI, Google, Procore, and Zillow.
You will lead and scale the engineering team building PermitFlow's core agentic infrastructure and evaluation systems. This is a hands-on builder-leader role where you own both people leadership and technical execution for the systems that determine whether an AI agent can autonomously submit a permit or requires human intervention.
Key responsibilities include: leading and growing an engineering team focused on agentic infrastructure; owning the technical architecture behind workflow agents (orchestration, model serving, latency, cost optimization, failure handling); partnering with the Product Manager, AI to define reliability standards and build engineering systems that gate releases; building and scaling evaluation infrastructure including golden datasets, LLM-as-judge pipelines, human annotation tooling, and online monitoring; driving internal tooling for testing, error analysis, and optimization; improving system reliability and observability as usage scales; and hiring and developing engineers with genuine ML/AI systems depth.
You will report directly to the VP of Engineering, who values hands-on technical leadership. The role requires deep technical fluency alongside people management—you'll be comfortable in code review, architecture review, and model/system tradeoffs while building strong engineering culture through clear expectations, 1:1s, feedback loops, and career development.
This is a systems-building role at the foundation of a category being created in real time, not a maintenance position. You'll drive your own roadmap end-to-end from technical direction through delivery and measurable accuracy and reliability gains in production.
