Rent the Runway is seeking an Employment and Commercial Counsel to join its lean Legal team at the Brooklyn headquarters. This is a hybrid role (Monday–Thursday in-office) reporting to the Chief Legal & Administrative Officer. You will serve as the lead attorney for employment law matters across the business, advising the People Team and executives on recruitment, employee relations, performance management, leaves of absence, accommodations, labor and wage-hour matters, internal investigations, worker's compensation, and immigration. You will develop and maintain HR policies, procedures, and form documents in partnership with the People team. You will also draft and review commercial contracts with designer partners, sponsors, advertisers, influencers, ambassadors, technology partners (SaaS/software licensing), consultants, and others. You'll collaborate with colleagues on the Legal team to scale RTR's legal function by building templates, policies, procedures, and optimizing the legal tech stack. As a generalist, you will advise various teams on business initiatives, brand relationships, transportation, safety, environmental compliance, and international trade. You'll develop training materials, work independently on matters you own, and collaborate on key deliverables with the Chief Legal & Administrative Officer, Deputy General Counsel, Sr. Manager of Legal, and business leaders. Required: JD and NY bar membership (or eligibility to register as in-house counsel in NY); 4+ years practicing law (including 2+ years employment law and 2+ years in-house counsel experience); experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements; practical, proactive, and creative approach to counseling; excellent judgment; ability to translate legal issues into plain English for non-lawyers; strong collaborative work ethic with autonomy; flexibility to manage multiple critical projects under tight deadlines. Preferred: experience with non-exempt workforces; familiarity with marketing, advertising, tech, ecommerce, retail, manufacturing, or contract lifecycle management.
