This Director role sits on the Asset Acquisition & Diligence (AAD) team and bridges data science with product strategy. You will own the strategy for scaling Formation's data science work in asset evaluation and diligence—deciding which one-off analyses have generalization potential and what form that should take (landscape analyses, fully engineered tools, or standing analyses that inform sourcing).
You will direct a working team of data scientists and engineers (who report to functional leads) day-to-day, setting roadmap and sequencing work based on business impact. You'll work closely with Data Science and Business Development as strategic partners, translating scientific findings into scaled capabilities by understanding the science deeply enough to identify generalization and alpha opportunities.
Key responsibilities include owning the scaling strategy for asset acquisition data science work; directing the cross-functional team and roadmap; working with scientific and technical teams to identify new AI opportunities; and guiding technical approaches on methods being scaled, including statistical validity, pipeline design, and dataset evaluation. You need sufficient technical depth to judge when a diligence method holds up at scale and enough product judgment to know when "scale" means a single exhaustive analysis rather than a maintained tool.
You bring 7+ years in data science, applied science, or technical product roles with progressively broader scope, including at least one role where you turned analytical work into deployed capability. Life sciences experience is essential—you've worked in biotech, pharma, or related industry and understand drug development lifecycle well enough to have informed opinions on where computational methods hold up. You're a strategic thinker who decides what's worth scaling based on business and scientific impact, not novelty or ease of build.
