Candescent is a fintech company transforming digital banking and financial services through intelligent, API-first solutions. The Director, Product Counsel will lead legal strategy across product development, governance, privacy, and emerging technology initiatives, serving as a strategic advisor to executive leadership, product, engineering, security, and compliance teams.
Key responsibilities include:
**Product & Regulatory Counsel**: Partner with Product, Engineering, Security, and Compliance to provide strategic legal guidance throughout the product lifecycle. Advise on regulatory requirements for digital banking, payments, customer data, AI, and emerging technologies. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and international laws, translating complex legal requirements into actionable business recommendations.
**Commercial Transactions & Partnerships**: Lead negotiation and drafting of strategic technology, integration, partnership, and customer-facing agreements. Develop contract templates, legal standards, and negotiation playbooks to support scalable growth.
**AI Governance & Emerging Technology**: Lead enterprise and product-level AI governance initiatives. Develop and maintain AI policies, standards, and governance frameworks. Manage the company's AI inventory and risk assessment processes. Serve as a key member of the AI Governance Committee and support executive and Board-level reporting.
**Privacy & Data Protection**: Develop and maintain global privacy policies and compliance frameworks. Advise on data protection obligations. Draft and negotiate Data Processing Agreements and privacy terms. Monitor emerging privacy regulations.
**Governance & Risk Management**: Create legal playbooks, guidance documents, and training materials. Identify legal and regulatory risks and develop mitigation strategies aligned with business objectives.
**Leadership & Team Management**: Lead, mentor, and develop a team of international attorneys. Foster a collaborative, high-performing culture focused on business partnership and service excellence.
Required: J.D. from accredited law school, active bar membership (at least one U.S. state), 7+ years as Product Counsel, Technology Counsel, Privacy Counsel, or related role. Demonstrated experience supporting technology products, SaaS platforms, fintech, or regulated financial services. Strong contract drafting, negotiation, and communication skills. Proven ability to operate independently and manage competing priorities. Executive presence and collaborative mindset.
Preferred: Banking, fintech, payments, or regulated financial services experience. Deep knowledge of GLBA, BSA, AML, KYC, third-party risk management, and U.S./global privacy laws.
