Beacon Biosignals is transforming precision medicine for the brain through at-home EEG platforms and diagnostics. The company serves life sciences partners in clinical development and operates a diagnostics business combining EEG and cardiopulmonary signals for sleep and CNS disorder assessments. You will lead and grow Beacon's Product Design function as Director of Product Design, reporting to the VP of Platform. This is a player-coach role where you'll lead a team of three senior product designers while staying close to the craft yourself. Product Design at Beacon is a shared function spanning hardware experiences (EEG headbands and devices), mobile apps for participants and patients, web applications for clinical teams and trial sponsors, printed materials, and internal business process design across logistics, support, and clinical operations. Key responsibilities include: - Leading, coaching, and developing three senior product designers, helping them grow their craft and build clear career paths - Crafting and executing a vision for product design at Beacon, translating it into a concrete growth plan as the company scales - Operating as a player-coach, taking on design work yourself to set standards and demonstrate best practices - Owning prioritization across the full breadth of design surfaces (device, mobile, web, print, business process) and managing tradeoffs - Building cross-functional partnerships with Device Engineering, Platform, Clinical Operations, Logistics, Support, and Quality - Establishing processes, standards, and shared systems (design language, reusable patterns, design reviews) that enable scaling - Ensuring rigorous, well-documented design contributions to regulated products, partnering with Quality and Regulatory on usability and human factors - Owning headcount planning, budgets, and vendor relationships for the design function - Developing deep understanding of all stakeholders: patients using devices at home, clinical staff, site teams, trial sponsors, and internal teams - Developing a research practice that keeps stakeholder understanding current - Anticipating and addressing design debt, inconsistency, and unowned experience problems before they become urgent Beacon maintains robust asynchronous work practices with office hubs in Boston, New York City, and Paris. Candidates based in the Boston area are preferred. Requirements: - 10+ years of product design experience, including 4+ years managing and developing designers - Experience building or substantially maturing a design function, with knowledge of what the first eighteen months entails - Portfolio spanning both hardware and software experiences (physical devices, mobile apps, data-heavy web applications, printed materials) - Experience and familiarity working in medical device space, clinical diagnostics, real-world data, pharma/biotech, or related fields - Prior work in regulated industries with successful navigation of tension between fast-paced iterative design and strict design controls - Familiarity with usability engineering and human factors practice (e.g., IEC 62366, FDA human factors guidance) is a strong plus - Genuine enthusiasm for coaching senior individual contributors with ability to give feedback that experienced designers will respect and act on - Comfort being hands-on without defaulting to it; ability to distinguish between modeling work and doing work because it's easier than delegating - Experience designing service and business process experiences, not just product interfaces - Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including in regulated or quality-sensitive environments - Bias towards simplicity, avoiding misallocated complexity, and imposing structure at the right time - Demonstrated success working in highly asynchronous remote work environments
