Director of Footwear is the strategic and technical leader driving the creation of industry-leading running shoes at Tracksmith. This role sits at the intersection of sports science, advanced engineering, and consumer insights, leading a high-performing technical team of internal and external resources to deliver footwear that maximizes energy return, optimizes biomechanics, and sets new benchmarks for weight, fit, and durability. Key responsibilities include leading end-to-end development of the performance running portfolio (Core Statement, Racing, Trail, and Track & Field), overseeing the transition from 2D concepts to manufacturable 3D prototypes while ensuring all performance metrics are achieved. You will champion the commercialization of cutting-edge running technologies, guiding integration of supercritical foams, carbon-fiber/composite plates, and engineered lightweight upper materials into seasonal products. The role requires partnering closely with sports research labs, wear-test coordinators, and elite athletes, using quantitative performance data and qualitative runner feedback to refine fit, ride, and mechanical efficiency prior to production. You will work alongside Product and Merchandising to build, evolve, and sustain key running franchises, balancing disruptive innovation with consistent, reliable rides expected by loyal consumers. Responsibilities include managing complex costing structures associated with premium performance materials, negotiating with Tier 1 and Tier 2 factory partners in Asia to achieve margin targets without compromising technical integrity. You will serve as the primary technical liaison for overseas factory development centers, overseeing advanced tooling creation, complex BOMs, and ensuring quality control standards for high-stress performance components. The role demands cross-functional process management, coordinating with Planning, Merchandising, and Operations teams to ensure development aligns with strategic business objectives and go-to-market timelines. Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Biomechanics, Sports Science, or related field; 10–12+ years of progressive footwear development experience with proven track record scaling high-performance running products from concept to global market launch; and minimum 4+ years of direct team management leading cross-functional teams in fast-paced, milestone-driven product creation environments. Extensive on-the-ground experience working with Asian manufacturing partners, specifically factories with expertise in advanced athletic footwear and tooling, is essential, with willingness to travel internationally.
