Perplexity AI, an AI answer engine and search product company founded in 2022, seeks an experienced litigation attorney to lead and build out its in-house litigation practice. This Director-level role offers significant autonomy and direct ownership of high-stakes legal matters in a rapidly growing AI technology company.
You will manage complex litigation and pre-litigation disputes across intellectual property (copyright, trademark, trade secrets), privacy, commercial, and regulatory matters. Responsibilities include developing comprehensive case strategies aligned with business objectives, managing matters through all phases from pleadings through appeals, selecting and managing outside counsel relationships, and negotiating fee arrangements. You will evaluate litigation threats and disputes across jurisdictions, developing resolution proposals that minimize business disruption.
A key aspect of this role is partnering closely with AI, product, and engineering teams to proactively identify litigation risks during product development and go-to-market planning. You will translate complex legal requirements into actionable guidance for technical teams and assist in responding to regulatory investigations from government and private organizations.
You will also build internal litigation processes, policies, and discovery workflows that scale with company growth, and monitor the evolving legal landscape for AI, copyright, and privacy law—translating court decisions, agency guidance, and legislative developments into executive-ready advice for business leaders.
The ideal candidate combines 15+ years of complex commercial litigation experience (preferably representing emerging technology companies) with deep substantive knowledge of litigation practice and procedure. You should have exceptional analytical and organizational skills, strong business acumen, and the ability to communicate clearly with both business and technical audiences. Experience with copyright and privacy litigation for AI or emerging tech companies is highly valued, as is experience building or scaling litigation functions at growth-stage companies. You must be comfortable with novel legal issues where rules are still being written, demonstrate intellectual curiosity about AI technology, and thrive in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
