Patreon is a creator platform with 300,000+ creators, 100M+ free memberships, and 25M+ paid memberships, having generated $10B+ for creators since inception. The company is scaling globally and seeking a Director of Indirect Tax to lead all indirect tax operations across the business.
In this role, you will own Patreon's global indirect tax obligations end-to-end, including marketplace sales taxes, ESS, VAT, GST, JCT, and similar transaction taxes. You will be hands-on and integral to tax operations from collections through remittance, working closely with Product, Engineering, and Finance teams to design and enhance how the platform handles indirect taxes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as the expert on all indirect tax matters for the organization
- Lead preparation of indirect tax returns, supporting calculations, work-papers, and payments to meet external deadlines
- Clearly communicate tax obligations to internal and external stakeholders, building compliance pathways
- Act as first point of contact for organization, Creator, and Patron tax queries; develop resources to help users understand and comply with global tax obligations
- Monitor legislative updates and initiate platform changes to ensure compliance
- Manage tax controversies, including responses to information document requests from tax authorities, coordination with local tax advisors, audit strategy, and quantification of tax/reserve impacts
- Prepare monthly account reconciliations, reporting schedules, and variance analysis
- Work with management and external auditors on compliance with accounting guidance, FAS 5 reserves, and SOX requirements
- Research and analyze indirect tax opportunities and exposures related to global expansion, systems/controls, refunds, and cash flow management
- Demonstrate curiosity and drive to innovate on behalf of creators worldwide
You will work in a hybrid model, expected to be in the New York office three days per week (unless hired into a remote-eligible role).
REQUIREMENTS:
- 10–12+ years of experience in indirect tax
- Intimate knowledge of VAT/GST and similar transaction taxes
- Prior experience with electronically supplied service providers and marketplace providers
- Strong experience and knowledge in U.S. GAAP, FAS 5, and internal controls
- Experience with informational reporting (Forms 1099, 5471, etc.)
- Direct prior experience with interpretation and application of developing law
- Proven success in tax controversy management and settlement
- Previous experience performing tax research and providing technical advice on U.S. state and international tax issues
- Self-starter with ability to manage multiple deadlines and responsibilities
- Team leader able to shepherd projects from beginning to end
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and multitasking skills
- High level of honesty, integrity, commitment, and responsibility
- Superior written and verbal communication skills with strong interpersonal abilities
- Experience with NetSuite; outsourced sales tax providers a plus
