Octopus Energy is seeking a Director of Forecasting to lead the build-out of forecasting and asset optimization analytics in a new East Asian market. This is a rare opportunity to create and lead a new function from the ground up, starting with pilot projects and expanding to a national, multi-province approach.
You will lead the development of a sophisticated forecasting engine covering price, generation, and demand forecasting. Initial responsibilities include researching data feeds, contracting with meteorology providers, and building generation forecasts for renewable plants (solar, wind, hydro). You'll develop system demand forecasts and combine volume forecasts to generate price forecasts at day-ahead and real-time intervals.
The role blends hands-on technical work with leadership. You'll spend significant time coding initially, designing a modular forecasting engine adaptable to different provincial market rules and price signals. You'll quickly identify resource requirements, lead recruitment of a high-quality analytics team, and set strategic direction for the software platform.
Key technical responsibilities include understanding real-time price formulae, leveraging LLM models for efficient development (with potential partnership opportunities with firms like Anthropic), managing complex data pipelines and visualization suites, and implementing the tech stack on AliCloud while ensuring compliance with local data security standards.
You'll spend a couple of months at Octopus HQ in the UK to get up to speed before deploying in-country. This role offers the chance to build a new function targeting one of the largest opportunities in global energy, combining Octopus's proven track record (12M+ customers globally, £7B renewable energy portfolio) with expansion into high-growth East Asian markets.
