Relay is a digital banking platform serving self-made business owners with financial clarity and control tools. As Director of Compliance, you will own the entire compliance program end-to-end, including AML, sanctions, KYB/CDD, regulatory compliance, monitoring, testing, and operations. You'll be responsible for building and leading the compliance team, establishing policies, procedures, and risk assessments that scale with the business.
Key responsibilities include: owning the compliance relationship with Relay's sponsor bank through day-to-day partnership, exams, audits, and new product approvals; designing an evidence-driven monitoring and testing infrastructure that demonstrates control effectiveness with data; setting financial crimes strategy for transaction monitoring and suspicious activity reporting; moving from periodic KYB review to continuous re-verification with focus on synthetic business identity detection; embedding compliance requirements into product design from inception; tracking regulatory landscape changes (FinCEN, Nacha, sanctions, sponsor oversight) and translating them into control updates; building and coaching the compliance team; scaling operations through AI and automation so agents handle evidence assembly while your team focuses on disposition and attestation; measuring both risk outcomes and customer friction to avoid unnecessary disruption; and providing board and leadership reporting on program health and remediation.
You bring 8+ years of compliance experience in fintech, banking, or payments, with demonstrated success building compliance programs and control frameworks from the ground up rather than maintaining inherited ones. You've owned program effectiveness personally and understand the difference between appearing compliant and withstanding regulatory scrutiny. You have direct experience managing sponsor bank, regulator, or examiner relationships and know that credibility is built between exams. You lead through data, defining metrics that prove controls work, and prefer showing regulators evidence over assertions. This is a build role with mandate and tooling to create a modern compliance function that unlocks launch velocity and product expansion.
