Garner Health is seeking a Director of Applied Science to lead Garner Health Intelligence (GHI), the foundational data and algorithms backbone powering all company products. GHI is responsible for doctor quality rankings across medical subspecialties, clinical data assets, and Garner Insights, an enterprise data platform sold to healthcare providers. This role owns the business end-to-end—not just advising but driving technical direction, building a world-class team, managing production systems, and owning both technical and commercial outcomes.
You will lead a team of applied scientists, clinical researchers, and product managers, working closely with data and ML Ops engineering. The role is analogous to heading a quantitative trading group at a top hedge fund: someone who has personally built algorithmic systems and now leads an organization doing this work at scale.
Key responsibilities include: leading the team to build and evolve doctor-ranking and categorization algorithms; owning the GHI roadmap and standards; building and developing the organization across Applied Science, Clinical Research, and Garner Insights through hiring and growing both individual contributors and managers; being accountable for business results including healthcare cost/quality improvements and commercial performance of Garner Insights; staying close to the hardest, most ambiguous problems to personally shape objective functions and decision frameworks; deciding where to invest (ML, optimization, heuristics, simpler methods) and directing team effort; partnering with executive and cross-functional leaders to align GHI with company strategy; and representing GHI at the highest levels internally and externally.
The ideal candidate has 7+ years in applied science, quantitative research, machine learning, or related fields, with significant time personally building algorithmic systems and a relevant advanced degree preferred. You should have a track record running an algorithms-driven organization as a business (e.g., quantitative research at a hedge fund or ML organization at a top tech company), owning both technical results and accountability. Management experience managing managers and scaling high-performing technical teams is essential. You need deep quantitative and applied problem-solving skills with judgment to set organizational standards for metrics and methods, recognized technical authority to lead expert scientists, strong judgment in choosing between statistical models/heuristics/optimization/simpler methods, executive communication skills driving organizational alignment, and commitment to a high-performing, mission-driven team operating with urgency and accountability.
Based in the NYC Financial District office, this role requires 3 days per week in-office (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday).
