xAI is seeking a Design Engineer to join the High Power Engineering team supporting AI training campus infrastructure. You will design, build, operate, and maintain electrical systems for data centers, working with a small on-site team to scale high-capacity power systems driven by compute demand.
Key responsibilities include producing and maintaining single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, panel schedules, cable schedules, conduit and raceway layouts, grounding plans, and equipment elevations. You will perform load calculations, voltage drop analysis, cable ampacity and derating, conduit fill, and pull-tension analysis for long underground runs. The role requires sizing MV/LV transformers, switchgear, busway, and feeders while specifying impedance, BIL, temperature rise, and short-time ratings.
You will write equipment specifications and technical bid evaluations for ring-main units, transformers, switchgear, busway, and PDUs. Supply model inputs to protection and power-system studies, resolve field RFIs, issue design changes during construction, and maintain organized design and asset documentation. Compliance with NFPA 70, 70B, 70E, NESC, and IEEE standards is essential.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or related discipline; 3+ years of electrical design experience in data center, industrial, or utility facilities. Preferred experience includes issued-for-construction drawing sets in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or Revit; working knowledge of NEC Articles 110, 215, 240, 250, 310, and 450; medium-voltage cable system design; power systems analysis software (ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, Matlab, PSCAD); Revit or BIM coordination; EIT certification or PE track; and multi-phase build experience.
This is a full-time, on-site role in Memphis, TN with up to 25% travel for factory witness testing, vendor engagement, and supporting other sites. You must be willing to work extended hours and weekends, perform hands-on work in all environments, remain focused in hazardous settings while wearing PPE, lift up to 25 lbs, provide 24/7 on-call emergency support, and hold a valid driver's license.
