Cartesia is building frontier AI models based on State Space Models (SSMs), a novel architecture invented by the founding team at Stanford AI Lab. The company is backed by leading VCs including Index Ventures, Lightspeed, and others.
The Data Strategy Team reports directly to Cartesia's founders and shapes model capabilities through data sourcing and evaluation. As Data Strategy Lead, you'll own one of the most critical inputs to frontier AI models with broad autonomy and impact.
Key responsibilities:
- Partner with research and modeling teams to identify model failures through evaluations and customer conversations
- Design, source, and maintain evaluation frameworks that define model quality, grounded in observed customer failures and continuous benchmarking
- Establish new sources of human data to advance model performance, building collection pipelines from scratch and owning data quality end-to-end
- Stay close to research—read papers, understand which datasets unlock capabilities, and collaborate on data collection priorities
- Engage commercially with customers, support go-to-market efforts, and drive revenue growth
You'll work across research, product, and GTM teams, making decisions with incomplete information and building new processes from the ground up. The role requires solving ambiguous problems, learning quickly, and creating leverage through systems.
Required: 3–10 years in high-ownership roles (founder, GM, strategy/ops at startup); technical fluency with data and SQL proficiency; high standards, bias for action, strong attention to detail; comfort with ambiguity and rapid pace; collaborative and mission-driven mindset.
Nice to have: AI/ML data operations experience, background in audio/speech/language workflows, CS or industrial engineering background.
