OpenRouter is the leading AI routing and infrastructure layer enabling developers and enterprises to access, manage, and optimize large language models across providers without lock-in or unnecessary cost. As a Data Scientist, you will build the intelligence layer powering how millions of developers and AI agents interact with the world's largest model marketplace. You will own data questions end-to-end: framing problems, digging into data, and shipping answers that directly impact product and customer experience. Your work will inform routing heuristics, analytics products, and roadmap decisions. Key responsibilities include: - Building and improving rules, heuristics, and models that drive core model and provider routing systems - Creating analytics products and conducting deep-dive analyses to help users understand usage, diagnose issues, and optimize workflows - Designing and shipping user-facing data features such as task-type classification taxonomies and performance ranking pages - Defining and tracking product metrics (feature adoption, engagement, platform health) that inform architectural decisions - Contributing to the data warehouse (dbt, ClickHouse) to ensure analytical infrastructure scales Required qualifications: - 4+ years in data science, applied ML, or quantitative product roles at high-growth companies - Production-level data product experience (models, algorithms, classifiers, scoring systems) - Strong SQL skills with large-scale analytical databases (ClickHouse, BigQuery, or similar) - Deep fluency with AI/LLMs; daily use of AI tools with informed opinions on model evaluation and prompt engineering - Excellent statistical and mathematical foundations (distributions, causal inference, experimental design) - Python proficiency for prototyping, simulations, and data pipelines - Product-oriented mindset; ability to translate complex systems into clear, shippable solutions - Strong written communication for technical and non-technical audiences Bonus experience includes LLM evaluation/benchmarking, developer platforms, NLP/ML engineering, and TypeScript.
