Neara is building physics-enabled digital twins of electricity grids using advanced machine learning to help utilities understand infrastructure challenges and build resilience. As a Data Scientist, you will analyze diverse real-world data—topography, LIDAR, imagery, vegetation, structural loading, and electrical connectivity—to inform the digital twin model and drive product direction with high visibility. Your responsibilities include modeling accurate digital twin networks from imperfect data using AI, deep learning, and classical ML algorithms; surfacing meaningful analytics such as wildfire risk to guide customer infrastructure investment; advising company strategy based on data insights; conducting experiments and A/B tests to improve grid modeling; QA-ing and improving predictive models to identify data issues like distribution drift and overfitting; crafting scalable data pipelines for diverse sources including LiDAR, aerial photography, and GIS; and mentoring others in model training, data analytics, and data-driven product development. You bring 3–6 years of experience as a data scientist or ML scientist at technical, data-driven companies operating in complex environments. Geospatial data or power grid experience is a plus. You have strong data intuition, excellent communication skills, and proven ability to share findings with customers and senior leaders. You demonstrate proficiency with AI/ML, experience translating models into experiments and deployable software, and comfort with data storage and ETL technologies (Parquet, Databricks, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, Spark, DynamoDB). AWS cloud environment experience is required. You excel at problem-solving in new domains, working asynchronously and cross-functionally, owning problems proactively, and ideally have prior energy industry experience. The role offers exposure to a sophisticated multi-modal data stack and the opportunity to build models that directly prevent wildfires and mitigate disaster risks across millions of kilometers of infrastructure. Your work will evolve from experiments into core product features that influence how the world's largest utilities invest.
