Axle Energy is building software infrastructure for the decarbonised energy system. The company controls hundreds of thousands of energy assets—vehicle chargers, heating systems, and home batteries—optimizing when electricity is consumed to align with cheap and green supply. The role is a full-stack data scientist position focused on building, optimizing, and deploying machine learning models that operate reliably at scale in production. Key responsibilities include developing models for energy trading and grid optimization, taking ownership of the complete lifecycle from data exploration through production deployment, and writing production-quality Python code. You'll develop deep domain expertise in electricity markets, grid dynamics, and trading strategies. The team is small and collaborative; you'll interact directly with clients and wear multiple hats. The tech stack centers on Python for backend work, React for frontend (less relevant here), Docker for containerization and reproducibility, and GCP for deployment. The company is an aggressive user of AI tools like Claude and encourages continuous workflow optimization. Axle operates with a deliberately flat structure and equitable compensation philosophy (1:1 median ratio between founder and team pay). The London office is dog-friendly and located near Farringdon; hybrid arrangement requires 2–3 days per week in-office to maximize collaboration. Additional benefits include meaningful equity, enhanced parental leave, and bi-annual team retreats. The company is backed by Energize Capital and Accel.
