Halter is a venture-backed agtech company transforming livestock farming through virtual fencing technology. The company enables farmers and ranchers to manage cattle sustainably and productively without traditional fencing, quad bikes, or herding dogs—using precision technology instead.
You'll join a small, focused R&D team as a Data Analyst specializing in the guidance data domain. This role extends well beyond traditional analytics: you'll become a domain expert in virtual fencing technology, animal behavior, and how livestock interact with Halter's systems. You'll own the guidance data domain alongside one other data analyst, providing insights, running trials, and proactively identifying improvement opportunities.
Your responsibilities include:
- Writing SQL queries and analyzing complex datasets to understand animal behavior and system performance
- Conducting statistical analysis with scientific rigor, identifying data inconsistencies and root causes
- Collaborating with internal teams and external research partners on virtual fencing studies
- Extending into data engineering and backend work, pushing the boundaries of the traditional data analyst role
- Spending time both at Auckland HQ and at the R&D farm in Morrinsville, observing cattle and building practical domain knowledge
- Communicating insights to diverse audiences—farmers, engineers, researchers, and leadership
You bring strong analytical and statistical skills, proficiency with SQL, Python, and/or R, and a proven ability to learn quickly in unfamiliar domains. You're curious, scientifically rigorous, and comfortable operating in ambiguity. Experience in a data analysis role and/or a tertiary degree in statistics or related field is expected. A genuine interest in farming and agriculture is a strong motivator—Halter's farmers expect the team to understand farming as deeply as they do.
Halter is backed by Tier 1 investors including Founders Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, DCVC, Blackbird, and others. The company offers competitive benefits including unlimited paid annual leave, 6 months fully paid parental leave, wellness support, and an employee stock ownership plan.
