OpenAI's Critical Harm Operations team is seeking a senior cybersecurity and cyber intelligence leader to build and scale enforcement systems for severe user-safety risks, including frontier risks and material harm. This role combines deep individual-contributor expertise with direct people-management accountability.
You will set strategic direction for Cyber Operations, translating organizational priorities into clear operating models, SOPs, escalation paths, and quality systems. You'll serve as the senior cybersecurity expert for complex, high-risk decisions across ChatGPT, API, Codex, agents, and emerging product surfaces. The role requires building trust and creating clarity across FTEs, BPO partners, and cross-functional teams while navigating ambiguity and disagreement.
Key responsibilities include: establishing strategic direction and operating models; providing expert judgment on complex cyber and policy decisions; building and scaling reviewer capability through onboarding, certification, coaching, and calibration; owning operational health (queue coverage, productivity, quality metrics, SLA adherence); using analysis and automation to diagnose root causes and reduce manual effort; building durable quality and evaluation systems; developing new operational capabilities from 0→1; and presenting crisp recommendations to executives and partners.
You should have 8+ years in cybersecurity, cyber intelligence, threat intelligence, incident response, or related fields, with 4+ years leading teams. Ideal candidates have built and scaled cyber operations or abuse-prevention capabilities, designed human-in-the-loop automation systems, bring strong cyber judgment about attacker behavior and emerging threats, and have experience improving high-stakes operations and vendor programs. You are highly analytical, can create structure in ambiguous environments, influence across organizations, and possess exceptional executive presence and communication skills. Strong customer-service acumen and the ability to translate complex cyber judgment into reviewer-usable SOPs and training are essential.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in-office per week. OpenAI offers relocation assistance.
