Salary: USD 170,000 - 217,000 / annual
Insitro is a physical AI company focused on unlocking causal human biology and accelerating drug delivery through its Virtual Human™ platform for identifying genetic intervention points and TherML™ platform for translating them into therapeutics. The company is at a pivotal inflection point with multiple programs in metabolic disease and neuroscience advancing toward the clinic and first CTA/IND submission planned for late 2026.
You will serve as a pragmatic, high-output attorney on a small, senior legal team, reporting directly to the Associate General Counsel. This is a high-volume role where you own matters end-to-end across research, lab and technical operations, IT, procurement, finance, and HR, covering both commercial and operational matters.
Key responsibilities include: drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial agreements (CDAs, MSAs, SOWs, consulting agreements, vendor and supplier terms); serving as primary legal contact for business and R&D teams; supporting lab operations on MTAs, research services agreements, and reagent/instrument purchases; negotiating cloud, compute, and infrastructure agreements for ML platforms; owning and improving contract templates, playbooks, and CLM tooling; and deploying AI tools within the legal function for contract review, drafting, and knowledge management.
You will practice at the frontier of drug discovery and AI, often on questions without settled precedent. The legal department has genuine influence: scientists, engineers, and management come early rather than at the end. You will help build the legal function itself, including how AI reshapes legal work, with real influence over tooling, templates, and processes for years to come.
Required: 2–7+ years practicing law at a firm or in-house; J.D. from accredited U.S. law school and bar admission (preferably California); demonstrated track record drafting and negotiating commercial and technology agreements at volume; proven use of AI tools in legal practice with sound judgment about limits. Core competencies: dynamic self-starter who prioritizes and advances multiple matters; momentum builder who moves matters forward independently; sharp business judgment distilling complex topics into actionable guidance; trusted partner with discretion and collaborative style.
Preferred: life sciences or biotech experience; comfort with AI tools and workflows in legal practice; familiarity with data use agreements, AI/ML legal issues, cloud contracting, and open source licensing; employment law and immigration coordination experience; CLM or legal workflow tool administration.
Based in South San Francisco with hybrid schedule of three days per week in-office.
