OpenAI's Legal team is seeking an experienced Counsel to support global intellectual property litigation, dispute resolution, and regulatory matters. This is a highly cross-functional role reporting to the Associate General Counsel, working closely with Legal, Communications, Global Affairs, and Executive teams.
Key responsibilities include providing legal advice on complex global litigation and regulatory matters, including commercial disputes, intellectual property litigation (copyright and trademark), and regulatory investigations. You will manage and oversee outside counsel across all litigation phases—discovery, motion practice, trial preparation, and settlement negotiations. The role requires staying current on relevant laws, regulations, and industry trends, and communicating updates and legal guidance to company leadership. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess risk and develop legal strategies for dispute resolution.
Required qualifications: 8+ years of combined litigation and/or regulatory experience at innovative technology companies and law firms; JD with active license to practice law in California or another U.S. state; experience managing complex global intellectual property litigation across multiple jurisdictions; strong ownership mentality, curiosity about technology, enthusiasm for continuous challenge, and sound judgment in ambiguous situations.
The role is based in San Francisco, CA or New York, NY with a hybrid work model (3 days in office per week). OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.
