Brex is seeking an experienced Employment Counsel to serve as a trusted legal partner to the People team, providing practical, business-minded advice on employment matters affecting Brex's global workforce. This role is based in the Salt Lake City office on a hybrid schedule (minimum 3 days/week in office: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday), with up to 4 weeks annual fully remote work flexibility. You will advise on day-to-day employment issues including performance management, terminations, recruiting, hiring, leaves of absence, accommodations, compensation and benefits, and wage and hour matters. You'll support the development and implementation of policies and practices governing employees and contingent workers in partnership with the People team and senior Legal colleagues. Key responsibilities include managing employment-related complaints, disputes, litigation, investigations, and regulatory inquiries (e.g., EEOC charges); overseeing outside counsel retained for employment matters; identifying and recommending solutions for employment and contingent worker risks; researching and analyzing employment laws across US jurisdictions and international office locations; supporting manager and employee training delivery; and assisting with subpoenas, personnel records requests, and legal information requests. Required qualifications: 5+ years counseling on employment law at a law firm, in-house legal department, or both; direct partnership experience with People/HR functions as day-to-day legal advisor; strong organizational and project management skills; practical problem-solving mindset for dynamic environments; excellent collaboration and communication abilities; JD and active bar membership in good standing in at least one US state. Bonus experience includes 2+ years at a high-growth tech company, California employment law knowledge, exposure to international employment law (particularly in Brex office jurisdictions), and experience building or delivering employment-related manager training.
