Brex is seeking an Employment Counsel to serve as a trusted legal partner to the People team, providing practical, business-minded advice on employment matters affecting Brex's global workforce. This role combines day-to-day employment law guidance with strategic policy development for a high-growth fintech company operating in over 200 markets. Key responsibilities include advising on employment issues such as performance management, terminations, recruiting, leaves of absence, accommodations, compensation, benefits, and wage-and-hour matters. You'll support the development and implementation of policies governing employees and contingent workers in partnership with the People team and senior Legal colleagues. The role involves managing employment-related complaints, disputes, litigation, investigations, and regulatory inquiries (including EEOC charges), as well as overseeing outside counsel to ensure efficiency and value delivery. You'll identify employment and contingent worker-related risks and recommend practical mitigation solutions. The position requires research and analysis of employment laws across US jurisdictions and Brex's international office locations, with ongoing monitoring of legal developments and their potential impact. Additional responsibilities include supporting the development and delivery of employment-related manager and employee training, and assisting with responses to subpoenas, personnel records requests, and other legal information requests. The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of employment law experience at a reputable law firm, in-house legal department, or both, with direct experience partnering with People/HR functions as their day-to-day legal advisor. You'll need strong organizational skills, a practical problem-solving mindset, excellent communication abilities, and the ability to translate legal complexity for non-lawyers. A JD and active bar membership in good standing from at least one US state are required. Bonus qualifications include 2+ years at a high-growth tech company, California employment law knowledge, exposure to international employment law, and experience building manager training programs.
