Perplexity AI is seeking a Counsel, Product to join its Product, Privacy and Regulatory Legal team. This is a versatile, hands-on legal role with a center of gravity in consumer protection and a flexible mandate spanning product counseling, privacy, regulatory matters, marketing, subscriptions, and international expansion. You will serve as a primary legal partner for consumer products and features from early design through launch and post-launch review. Key responsibilities include advising on consumer protection issues (unfair and deceptive practices, disclosures, pricing, subscriptions, renewals, refunds, promotions, advertising claims, dark patterns, customer support); reviewing marketing, growth, and advertising initiatives including adtech and martech integrations; counseling product and engineering teams on privacy, data use, consent, retention, security, AI transparency, and age-related protections; leading legal review of cross-functional launches; supporting responses to consumer complaints and regulator inquiries from state attorneys general, competition authorities, and privacy authorities worldwide; assessing incidents and escalations; monitoring legal developments affecting AI products and online services; and helping build scalable legal infrastructure including templates, review standards, and training. You will work directly with Product, Engineering, Growth, Marketing, Support, Security, GRC, Policy, and Communications teams, reporting to the Senior Director, Product, Privacy and Regulatory Legal. The ideal candidate identifies legal issues quickly, learns products deeply, and provides practical paths forward. You will own matters independently and help turn recurring questions into clear guidance and durable systems. Required qualifications: J.D. from an accredited law school (or LL.M./equivalent) with current authorization to practice law in a U.S. state; at least five years of relevant legal experience at a law firm, government agency, or in-house with meaningful consumer protection or product counseling experience; strong command of U.S. consumer protection law and FTC Act Section 5 and state UDAP laws; experience with subscriptions/auto-renewal, advertising/marketing, privacy/data protection, payments, promotions, platform regulation, or AI governance; ability to lead product or regulatory matters independently; excellent judgment and risk assessment; clear writing and ability to translate legal requirements for non-legal teams; comfort learning technical systems; hands-on attitude with low ego and intellectual curiosity; genuine interest in AI products and their legal implications. Bonus qualifications include FTC or state attorney general experience, in-house experience at consumer tech/platform/marketplace/subscription companies, handling regulator inquiries or class action risk, and working knowledge of CCPA/CPRA, GDPR, state privacy laws, ROSCA, CAN-SPAM, TCPA, COPPA, state auto-renewal laws, or similar international regimes.
