Okta, a leading cloud-based identity and security SaaS provider, seeks an experienced Corporate Counsel specializing in Intellectual Property. This role sits within Okta's Legal team and focuses on building and executing a comprehensive global IP strategy to protect the company's innovations and competitive position in the identity and AI security space.
The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of IP experience, including software patent prosecution, combined with a technical background (CS, EE, or ECE degree) and active USPTO patent attorney registration. You'll work across multiple dimensions of IP protection:
Portfolio Management & Strategy: Oversee the lifecycle of Okta's patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret assets. Develop offensive and defensive IP strategies aligned with corporate development and business goals. Translate complex IP concepts into business-oriented advice for engineering, product, and executive stakeholders. Refine company-wide IP policies, including invention disclosure programs and patent incentive schemes.
Patent Work: Partner with engineering and product teams to identify patentable inventions and build patent literacy across the organization. Collaborate with outside counsel on drafting and prosecution of high-quality patent applications. Develop deep knowledge of the identity and cybersecurity patent landscape to guide strategy and ensure broad protection of core technologies and next-generation innovations.
Broader IP Issues: Advise on trade secret protection and policy implementation. Guide software copyright protection, open-source software compliance, and copyright claim management. Support trademark registration and enforcement for Okta and Auth0 brands. Handle IP-specific provisions in MSAs, JDAs, vendor contracts, and licensing agreements. Conduct IP due diligence for M&A transactions and draft related closing documents.
Compliance & Training: Support IP-related compliance and industry standards relevant to SaaS and cybersecurity. Deliver employee training on IP best practices and confidentiality.
Litigation Support: Assist across all phases of IP litigation.
This is a senior individual contributor role with significant strategic influence and cross-functional collaboration, but does not involve direct people management. The position offers exposure to cutting-edge identity and AI security technology, high-growth business dynamics, and complex IP challenges in a fast-paced environment.
