Okta, the world's identity company, is seeking a Corporate Counsel specializing in Intellectual Property to join its Legal team. This role focuses on building and executing Okta's global IP strategy while protecting the company's innovations and brand in the identity and cloud security space.
Key responsibilities include overseeing the lifecycle of Okta's IP assets (patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets) and ensuring alignment with corporate development and business goals. You will partner closely with engineering and product teams to identify patentable inventions, develop patent literacy across the organization, and collaborate with outside counsel on drafting and prosecuting high-quality patent applications. The role requires refining offensive and defensive IP strategies to maintain competitive advantage in the identity market.
Beyond patents, you will advise on strategic trade secret protection, software copyright issues and open-source software compliance, trademark registration and enforcement for Okta and Auth0 brands, and IP provisions in commercial agreements (MSAs, JDAs, vendor contracts, licensing deals). You will conduct IP due diligence for M&A transactions, support IP litigation across all phases, and help implement company-wide IP policies including invention disclosure programs.
The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of IP experience with a strong software patent prosecution background, a J.D. from an accredited law school, an undergraduate or graduate degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or related field, and active USPTO patent attorney registration. Experience with SaaS, cloud-based software, and cybersecurity is essential. You should be a builder who thrives in fast-paced environments, translates complex IP concepts into business-oriented advice, and collaborates effectively across legal and business teams.
