Monzo is seeking a Senior Product Manager for Controls to lead the Controls Product & Enablement team within the Controls Discipline. This newly established team sits at the intersection of Product, Risk, Data, and Engineering, and you will act as the Product Lead for Monzo's core risk lifecycles including Issues, RCSAs, Controls, Policy, and Regulatory Traceability.
You will own the Controls Product Roadmap, defining vision, strategy, and backlog for Monzo's internal risk products. Rather than writing requirements for others to build, you are expected to be a hands-on builder yourself—prototyping low-code tools, leveraging AI models, interrogating data pipelines, and architecting automated workflows to transform manual risk friction into seamless, automated self-service solutions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning the Controls Product Roadmap and replacing static, manual cycles with smart, data-driven platforms (SmartSuite, Zango, Looker, and native AI integrations)
- Hands-on prototyping and automation: directly designing, prototyping, and building automated workflows, API integrations, and low-code/no-code solutions from problem statement to working MVP
- Pioneering AI adoption across the discipline by experimenting with LLM prompting, custom agents, and automated evidence-gathering tools
- Driving the shift from annual point-in-time assessments to continuous, automated monitoring with real-time data triggers
- Ensuring high-impact product adoption through clear guidance, intuitive UI/UX workflows, and enablement for first-line risk owners
- Maintaining delivery momentum while guiding two specialized data/automation direct reports and removing blockers
Monzo treats its control framework, tools, and data pipelines as an internal product designed to give engineers, product managers, and business leads the ability to ship fast and safely. This role sits at the heart of the Control Discipline change agenda, building the controls product platform that powers safe growth.
The role is based in London with flexibility for distributed working within the UK (with ad hoc meetings in London). You will have two direct reports already in the team as data and automation specialists. As a newly established team, flexibility and adaptability are essential, along with a willingness to deal with ambiguity as the team establishes its operating rhythm.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Think like a Product Manager: obsess over user problems, value vs. effort prioritization, user experience, and shipping MVPs quickly
- Hands-on Builder: comfortable with SQL, Python (or similar), APIs, workflow tools, or low-code environments to build working prototypes yourself
- AI-Curious & Practical: actively experiment with AI/LLMs to automate manual tasks and make workflows smarter
- Understand Risk & Controls: fundamental understanding of risk concepts (control design, RCSAs, issue management) and see the opportunity to transform them through technology
- Thrive in Ambiguity: enjoy starting from first principles in fast-paced environments and turning messy operational problems into scalable digital solutions
- Experience leading teams through change programmes, ideally within Financial Services Controls functions
- Hands-on and supportive: take satisfaction in supporting colleagues, projects, and tasks of all sizes; can take diverse stakeholders on the journey
- Excited by Monzo's mission and product
NOT A FIT IF:
- Your technology and data experience has primarily involved defining requirements for others to build rather than building solutions yourself
- You aren't comfortable getting hands-on with data, automation tooling, and technical problem-solving
- You aren't comfortable with ambiguity or thinking from first principles
- You don't enjoy fast-paced environments
- You aren't happy with an MVP approach and iterative changes
- Your experience is primarily technical without sufficient understanding of risk and controls to translate control problems into effective solutions
